Today we learned about sumo wrestling. It’s not just big guys in diapers pushing each other. It’s about big guys in diapers pushing each other for spiritual fulfillment. We met two retired and very charming sumo wrestlers who showed us how they warm up, and the different moves they make to try to push the other guy out of the ring or onto the ground. They served us chanko, what the sumo wrestlers eat to bulk up. Believe it or not, it was extremely healthy. One of our group asked why don’t they just eat ice cream and donuts and they said that they avoid sugar because it isn’t healthy.
This man said that he was much bigger before he retired. He and his associate were an absolute delight. They made us feel very welcome, which is pretty amazing considering that they were nearly naked! They also displayed a very clear reverence for their sport.
