A few weeks ago, I attended the International Association of Pastel Societies conference in Albuquerque. It was a blast! I watched Kelly Milukas’ demo the use of pastels with encaustic. Wow! What a world changer! I sat in the front row and hung on her every word. When I got back home, I immediately spent gobs of money on new supplies and books.
Encaustic is painting with hot waxes. There are about a billion ways to do this. It is used a lot in mixed media work, which I have never dipped a toe in. You can use them with oil paint, oil pastels, soft pastels, collages. You can cut them, scrape them, sponge them, polish them, scrub them, rubber stamp them, stencil them, you get the idea.
I am keeping things very simple for now. Behold my first encaustic painting!
